Live Oak is the most specified shade tree in Texas and the one that leaves this farm in the largest numbers. It is familiar enough that the details get skipped, and a few of those details decide whether the trees on your plant list are still right in ten years. Here are the ones that come up on jobs.

Two species share the name, and the line runs near I-35
"Live Oak" on a plant list can mean either of two trees, and they are not interchangeable on every site.

Their ranges overlap through Central and South Texas and they hybridize freely there, which is why so many Texas Live Oaks read as something between the two descriptions and why labels vary between growers. If you are specifying for a job west of the Balcones Escarpment, or anywhere that took real damage in a hard freeze, the escarpment side of that family is the safer tree. On the coast, where salt and wind matter more than cold, the southern side is the one that gets big.
That same variability is the argument for a named selection when the drawing needs matched trees. Our Texas Live Oak 'Joan Lionetti' is a selected Quercus virginiana x fusiformis with a uniform upright form, good cold hardiness and tolerance for alkaline soils. On a formal row or a street planting, where one tree out of shape is the one everybody sees, a selection is considerably more predictable than seedling Live Oak.
Spec the spread, not the height
This is the one that costs money. A Live Oak is built wider than it is tall, and a spacing spec written off the height will be wrong.
The reference case is the Big Tree at Goose Island State Park north of Rockport, which is 44 feet tall and throws a crown 90 feet across, better than two to one. Nothing you plant on a commercial job will reach that in the life of the contract, but the proportion holds the whole way up: a Live Oak putting on caliper is putting on width faster than it is putting on height.
What that means in practice is that Live Oaks specified at 20 feet on centre along a drive will be touching within a decade and genuinely crowded at maturity, and the fix at that point is removals. Thirty to forty feet on centre is where each tree can still carry a full crown. If the design wants a closed canopy sooner, that is a legitimate reason to go tighter, but it should be a decision on the drawing rather than something discovered later.
The same habit is why Live Oaks are worth keeping away from a building line. The crown will get to the wall before the trunk looks anywhere near big enough to be a problem.
The pruning window is the one that will cost you a tree
Oak wilt is the reason Texas has a pruning calendar, and Live Oaks are the worst case for it, because of how their roots behave.
Live Oaks growing within roughly 50 to 100 feet of one another routinely graft their roots together. The fungus travels straight through those grafts, so an infection does not show up as one sick tree in a planting. It shows up as an expanding centre that takes the neighbours with it. In native stands the same trait produces mottes, dense islands of Live Oak that are often not a stand of separate trees at all but one individual that has been spreading underground and sending up trunk after trunk.
The disease also moves overland. Sap beetles pick up spores from fungal mats on trees that died the previous season and carry them to any fresh wound. That gives two rules worth writing into a scope of works:
- Do not prune oaks from February through June. That is when spore mats are producing and the beetles are most active, and a fresh cut in that window is an open invitation.
- Paint every oak wound immediately, in every season. The Texas A&M Forest Service is explicit that this applies year round, not only in spring, and it applies to any wound, including the ones a crew makes with a mower deck, a stake, or a strap on planting day.
That second point is the one that gets missed on installs. A tree that arrives clean can be wounded on site, and a Live Oak wound left open in March is a different risk from the same wound on a Crape Myrtle.
The leaf drop is in spring, not autumn
Live Oak is specified and sold as an evergreen, and for every practical purpose on a site it behaves like one. Botanically it is semi-evergreen, and the difference shows up once a year. They hold a full canopy through winter, then drop nearly all of it across a couple of weeks in late winter and early spring while the new leaves are already pushing behind them. The tree is never actually bare.
If you carry the maintenance contract, that matters: the heavy clean-up under a Live Oak is February and March, not November, and it arrives more or less at once. Scoping it for autumn means the crew is on site at the wrong time and the client is calling in spring.
What the containers give you
Live Oak is the largest crop on this farm, and it is grown at #45, #65, #100 and #200, with a small number carried on to #300. The caliper those containers produce is the farm-wide table:

The #65 is the one to know, because a 3 inch caliper minimum is one of the most common numbers on a Texas plant list and the #65 is the size that meets it. A #45 tops out around 2.5 inches and will not get there no matter how carefully you tag, and a #100 is a considerably bigger and heavier tree than the drawing is asking for, with the equipment bill that goes with it.
Worth saying plainly, because it affects bids being written now: we are between crops on #65 Live Oak as this is published in September 2026, and we expect the next block to come available in Spring 2027. If you are bidding work that plants before then, talk to us about whether the #45 or the #100 is the better substitution for that particular job. If the job lands in 2027 or later, this is exactly what contract growing is for, and it is worth getting your name on the trees while they are still coming up. Either way the availability list is the current answer, not this paragraph.

Live Oaks also establish well from containers, which matters more on this species than on some others precisely because you are asking the tree to build the wide root plate that carries that wide crown.

Ball moss is not what is wrong with the tree
You will get asked this one by clients. Ball moss and Spanish moss are epiphytes. They take a perch and nothing else, have no connection to the tree's vascular system, and draw no water or nutrients from it.
Heavy ball moss usually means the interior canopy has thinned and light is getting in, so it turns up on trees that are already under stress. It is a symptom, and a mild one. Treating the moss is cosmetic; working out what thinned the canopy is the actual job.
Why the wood matters on an exposed site
Live Oak is one of the densest hardwoods on the continent, at a specific gravity around 0.88 and up to 75 pounds per cubic foot. The famous demonstration is the USS Constitution, framed with southern Live Oak cut on St. Simons Island: in 1812 a British 18-pounder ball struck her side and bounced off that frame, and she has been Old Ironsides ever since.
The reason that is worth knowing on a job rather than at a pub quiz is that the same density, combined with a low broad crown and a deep root plate, is why Live Oaks are among the most wind firm trees available in this state. On a coastal site, or anywhere the client has already lost trees to a storm, that is a real argument for the species over a faster and softer shade tree.
You are specifying a tree that outlives the contract
The Big Tree at Goose Island is estimated at over a thousand years old, and it came through Hurricane Harvey making landfall effectively on top of it. Austin's Treaty Oak was poisoned outright with a hardwood herbicide in 1989 and survived, though only about a quarter of the tree could be saved.
These trees are extremely hard to kill, and that cuts both ways on a job. It means a Live Oak is a genuinely long-term asset on a site and worth the money. It also means a spacing or siting mistake does not quietly go away. The tree will still be there, and so will the mistake.
