Buying trees for a Houston job without buying them sight unseen
A large-caliper tree is not a commodity, and two trees of the same variety and caliper are not the same tree. On a Houston job the difference between the two is an hour of I-10.
Come out, walk the block, and tag the specific trees going on the job. Approve the quote and those exact trees are held for your ship date, so what arrives on site is what you stood in front of. If the drive is not worth it on a small order, the availability list tells you what exists before you call, and we will send photographs of what we would pull.
Bring the plan. It is easier to say what will and will not work on a site while looking at the trees.

The trees we grow that are worth planting in Houston
Houston is a hard place to establish a tree. Heavy clay that drains slowly, a water table that comes up in a wet spring, a humid summer that rewards some species and takes others apart, and a coast that gets storms. These are the ones on our list built for it.
- Bald Cypress Taxodium distichum Takes standing water and heavy gumbo clay, which is why it turns up on so many Houston detention and bioswale plans. Deciduous, and it will grow knees on a wet site.
- Live Oak Quercus virginiana The Gulf Coast standard. Evergreen, broad, and wind firm once established, which matters on a coast that gets hurricanes.
- Mexican White Oak Quercus polymorpha Fast for an oak and adaptable about soil. A common choice where a plan needs canopy sooner than a Live Oak will give it.
- Shumard Red Oak Quercus shumardii Handles clay, takes wet winters, and gives Houston one of its few dependable red falls.
- Mexican Sycamore Platanus mexicana Fast, big silver-backed leaves, and it holds up better against the leaf diseases that hit American Sycamore in a humid summer.
- Southern Magnolia 'D.D. Blanchard' Magnolia grandiflora 'D.D. Blanchard' A Gulf South native in its own right. Evergreen, dark foliage, and it is at home in this rainfall.
- Wax Myrtle Myrica cerifera Coastal native, tolerant of wet feet and salt air. Screens fast and takes a hard shear.
- Yaupon Holly 'Pride of Houston' Ilex vomitoria 'Pride of Houston' A Gulf Coast native, and the selection is named for the city. Evergreen, berries, and it forgives both flood and drought.
- Bur Oak Quercus macrocarpa Deep rooted and unfussy about soil. A long-lived shade tree for a site with room for it.
- Lacebark Elm Ulmus parvifolia Quick, tough, and tolerant of compacted soil, so it suits parking islands and street work.
We grow thirty-two varieties in all, and the rest of them are on the full list. Some are deliberately missing from the ten above. Arizona Cypress 'Blue Ice', Palo Verde 'Desert Museum', Desert Willow 'Sweet Bubba', Texas Mountain Laurel, Taylor Juniper and Spanish Dagger want sharp drainage and dry air, and they earn their place on a Hill Country or West Texas job rather than in Harris County clay. We would rather say so now than sell them to you twice.

Caliper for Houston commercial and municipal work
Commercial plans around Houston tend to call for trees a retail nursery does not carry, and city and MUD specifications often set a minimum caliper outright. We grow from #30 to #300, which runs from about 1.5 inch caliper and 5 feet tall up to 7 to 8 inch caliper at 16 to 18 feet.
Around 800 trees at #100 and larger are in containers here today. Container grown above ground means the whole root system comes with the tree, so it establishes faster than a field-dug tree of the same caliper and can go in the ground in most months of the year, which matters when a Houston schedule slips into July.

Freight is stated on every quote before you bid, so the number you carry into the bid is the number you pay. There is no line that appears later.
We deliver anywhere in Harris County and the surrounding metro, out to Katy, Cypress, The Woodlands, Sugar Land, Pearland, Conroe, Baytown and Galveston. If your own trailer is going that way anyway, you are welcome to load at the farm instead and keep the freight off the job entirely. Sealy sits directly on I-10, so a Houston delivery is one road.
Contract growing
Multi-year Houston developments, bid on trees that already exist
Houston builds in phases, and a phase three that needs two hundred matched Live Oaks is not something anybody sources in the month it is due.
Contract growing puts your name on specific trees while they are still growing here, at a price agreed at signing, so a job two or three seasons out is bid on trees you can drive out and look at today. About 1,500 trees are growing under contract for one customer right now, so this is a process we run rather than one we describe.
